Yep. Typical Arsenal.
Storage Sense Group Policy Settings (Coming... Eventually?)
Monday 17th December, 2018 16:32
While backing up some data, I temporarily ran very low on disk space and Storage Sense kicked in. I now have a load of blue double arrow icons on my Desktop. This indicates that NTFS compression was enabled in order to save disk space. I could say "thank you Microsoft" but I didn't want them to compress the files for me. I would have preferred to run out of disk space (I know this probably isn't a typical requirement). I've now gone into Settings and disabled it, and I'm now decompressing all of the files, but I wondered where the group policy setting was that would allow me to permanently disable it in case something changes in the future (because Microsoft occasionally does that with Windows 10). It turns out that, yet again, Microsoft launched a new feature and will follow up with group policy settings in a later release (or clarify how existing settings will apply to new features, such as Nearby Sharing which is controlled by "Continue Experiences On this Device"). The latest Insider previews, known as Windows 10 19H1, come with a set of policies to enable or disable the feature across the computer:

Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > System > Storage Sense

The new settings are:
  • Allow Storage Sense
  • Allow Storage Sense Temporary Files cleanup
  • Configure Storage Sense Cloud Content dehydration threshold
  • Configure Storage Sense Downloads cleanup threshold
  • Configure Storage Sense cadence
  • Configure Storage Sense Recycle Bin cleanup threshold
I can't wait to disable "Allow Storage Sense" in the next release. I'm still on 1803 on this particular machine, so it looks like Microsoft will have taken a year to release group policy settings for a feature they rolled out months ago.
